African Champions Cup:First Bank Seal Final Ticket

Nigeria’s Africa Champions Cup for women hopefuls, First Bank basketball club on Sunday sealed her place in the 2015 Africa biggest women club competition with a 107-24 points dropping of Energie basketball club of Benin Republic in a reverse fixtures at the Palais des Sports, Cotonu.


With two games left in the women zone-3 elimination schedule First Bank basketball club are already home and dry alongside Nigeria second representative Dolphins basketball club in the zone qualifier.

The Elephant Girls who defeated the Beninios in the first meeting last Thursday now boost of a 3-1 record as all the teams take a day off with an eye on the second match-up against arch rival Dolphins on Tuesday.

First Bank was led in scoring by Nkechi Akashili with a qualification high of 33 points is focus on ending the qualifiers in high spirit.

According to team tactician Peter Ahmedu, “Our goal is to pick one of the two available tickets for the final round in Angola but winning the zone championship will be a morale booster for the team going to Angola.

“The players and technical crew have realised some mistakes we made in the 71-83 points loss to Dolphins on Saturday and its good we are meeting again on Tuesday.

“They (Dolphins) should not rejoice yet as Tuesday game will prove the better side in the zone is.

“But our utmost goal is to attempt winning the continental title for Nigeria once again and I know we can achieve it.

“I have pleaded with the players to put behind them the loss to Dolphins and focus more on the remaining two games against Dolphins and ASPAC on Tuesday and Wednesday and the real championship in Angola.

The Nigerian side who showed some improvement on the court won all four quarters by 16-06, 21-05, 36-04 and 34-09 points.

First Bank guards, Upe Atosu and Chidimma Nwakamma were also on a double figure on the scorer sheet with 24 points and 13 points while centre and Nigeria international Chioma Udeaja landed a double double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
