Nigeria’s
last man standing in the Men’s Table Tennis Singles event at the
ongoing Olympic Games in Brazil, Aruna Quadri secured a well-deserved
4-1 victory over Slovakia’s Yang Wang on Sunday evening at the Riocentro
Pavilion 3.
The continent’s best player only resumed his Olympics
action today, having secured a bye into Round 2 of the Men’s Singles.
However he gave a good account of himself in the game, digging deep to
dismiss the threat posed by the Slovakian.
Quadri won the first
game 11-7, before going down by the same margin in the second. However
he held fort, winning the next three games 11-7, 11-9 and 11-6 to
advance to Round 3 of the competition.
Quadri will be excited by
his performance tonight, considering that his London 2012 campaign ended
in Round 2, after he succumbed to a 4-2 defeat in the hands of Turkey’s
Bora Vang.
He will face Taipei’s Chih-Yuan Chuang by 9pm tonight.
