Nnaji Nigeria’s Senior Women’s Basketball team, D’Tigress will Monday begin their quest for an Olympic ticket when they file out against Belarus in France. |
This is the second chance for the Nigerian women led by Helen Ogunjimi to secure an Olympic ticket after missing the first chance in the AFROBASKET for Women in Cameroon 2015, where they finished 3rd behind the host.
The team departed the
country on Friday for the qualifier in Nantes,France venue of the tournament that will last from 13-19 .
Head coach Scot Nnaji
said he carefully selected his players for the qualifier based on their
strength and experience.
Nnaji says despite
missing the chance of a training tour in Spain, the opening game is a must win for Nigeria.
"We have selected our players looking at their strength and speed,we need players that are very mobile to help us cover what we may lack against a good Belarussian side"
"We would have loved the training tour but it did not happen ,so what we have done was to keep the girls busy all though in camp,we know the kind of opponents we are to meet in our opener, the game against Belarus is so important to us,we will give it our best"
"My happiness is that i have a team that can spring surprises and for me ,this counts" Nnaji concluded.
The Tigress will also
clash with South Korea in group C, on Tuesday in the 12 teams battle for the remaining five slots for the Rio Olympics.
Africa's second flagbearers, Cameroon will also clash with Turkey Monday and Argentina in their second game in group B on Thursday.
