Team Nigeria Makes It Thirteen Gold At The AAG
Team Nigeria added four gold and three silver medals in the ongoing All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville Saturday,2015 to increase the gold medal table to thirteen (13) and overall 51 medals so far won.
The recent medals came from boxing and cycling. In boxing, Oluwafemi Oyeleye defeated Nsango Njikam from Cameroun in the welterweight (69kg) to pick the first gold medal for Nigeria.
Following the feat is Ajagba Efe who won the bout against Keddy Agnes of Seychelles in the Super +91kg. In the women category, Edith Ogoke put up a classical performance against Rana Abdelhamid to win gold in the middleweight (69-75kg) and Kehinde Obareh’s opponent Lightweight (57-60kg) division could not come out for the bout, which automatically qualified Obareh to pick the gold medal. Meanwhile, Efe Tobor Apochi lost to Mauritanian Kennedy St. Pierre in the Heavyweight (91kg) and Caroline Linus also lost to Bouchene Souhila of Algeria to pick the Silver medals. In cycling, Tombrapa Grikpa competing in the 62.5km road race finished second to win silver medal at a time of 01hr 45’10” seconds.
Team Nigeria Table Tennis in the team events advanced to the finals in the male and female semi-final categories. Before qualifying to the finals, Nigeria had defeated Ethiopia 3-0 in the women event at the quarterfinal stage, while the male team beat Togo with the same margin. Consequently, the female team beat Congo 3-0 in the semi-finals and the male team won against Ghana with the same margin.
The beach volleyball qualified for the finals with a win over Kenya with a 2-0 score. In Handball group stage events for men, Nigeria defeated Kenya 32-16. Meanwhile, Nigeria was victorious over Mozambique in the male and female Basketball competition when they won the Mozambique teams 78-62 and 81-64 respectively. In the game of Tennis, Nigeria qualified for the second rounds with a victory over Senegal, Gabon, Mozambique and Lesotho in the male singles category, while Nigeria also defeated Ethiopia, Ghana and Gabon in the female singles event. Team Nigeria in the football event shared a point each with Senegal in the male event with a 1-1 score while the Women's team suffered a 1-2 defeated in the hands of Cote d’Ivoire.The loss not withstanding they still made it to the semi finals
